Parents studying at the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) in Muhanga District are praising the university for providing a dedicated room where they can breastfeed their babies. This new space has made it easier for them to balance their studies and childcare responsibilities.
In an interview with Mamedecine.com, parents expressed joy about the breastfeeding room. One mother, who chose to stay anonymous, said:
“When I first came here and saw the breastfeeding room, I was so happy. Before, I worried about leaving my baby all day while I studied. Now, I can feed my baby when needed and focus on my classes.”
Another parent added that leaving her baby at home made it hard to concentrate:
“Before the room was set up, I kept leaving class to check on my baby. This caused problems with my teachers and made it hard to learn. Now, with the room here, I can study without worrying.”
Why ICK created the space
Father Prof. Fidèle Dushimimana, ICK’s Vice Chancellor, explained the decision:
“We noticed that some parents in our weekend program had young children. They needed a safe place to breastfeed while studying. Plus, higher education rules require schools to have such facilities to support students.”
The Vice Chancellor noted that the room has improved education quality:
“Before, parents were stressed about leaving their babies at home. This affected their focus. Now, they bring their babies with a caregiver and study calmly. This helps them learn better and do well in school.”

Importance of breastfeeding
Father Prof. Fidèle Dushimimana, who is an expert in psychology and human behavior, also highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding:
“Breastfeeding in the first six months helps children grow physically and mentally. It supports brain development, which is key for learning and behavior. Well-breasted children often have stronger self-confidence and social skills because of the close bond with their mothers.”
Conclusion
ICK’s breastfeeding room is a simple but powerful solution that supports student parents and their children. By addressing practical needs, the university is helping students succeed in their studies while ensuring their children get the care they need. This example shows how small changes can have a big impact on education and family life.
